HEALTHCARE TECHNOLOGY

The NHS is launching a digital cancer screening service for women via the NHS App, aiming to improve accessibility and uptake. Starting next month, women will receive reminders and can book breast screening appointments directly through the app, with cervical screening to follow in 2025. This initiative is part of a broader effort to digitise screening processes, projected to save £130 million over five years.

Current postal invitations cost £14.7 million annually, yet uptake for breast and cervical screenings has declined. In 2022-23, over a third of women missed breast screening, and similar trends are seen in cervical screening. The NHS aims to reverse this trend by leveraging technology, enhancing convenience, and ultimately improving early cancer detection rates.

HEALTHCARE INNOVATION NEWS

The Health Innovation Network South London has launched Cohort Two of the Accelerating FemTech programme, funded by Innovate UK and the Medical Research Council. This initiative supports 21 companies innovating in women's health, addressing areas like menstrual health, menopause, and pregnancy outcomes through advanced diagnostics and digital solutions.

Despite women making up over 51% of the population, they remain underrepresented in medical research. FemTech aims to bridge this gap, offering equitable healthcare and driving economic growth. The sector's value exceeded £39 billion in 2023. The programme, supported by various UK partners, provides bespoke support and prepares participants for funding opportunities, reflecting the growing interest in FemTech.

HEALTHCARE POLICY DEBATE

Health Secretary Wes Streeting and NHS CEO Amanda Pritchard launched a national debate to shape the 10-Year Health Plan. Key focuses include digital transformation, shifting care to communities, and prevention over treatment. Public input will guide the plan, due spring 2025.
