Immediate action is urged to rectify these issues and improve overall NHS performance.

Darren Hughes, director of the Welsh NHS Confederation, responded to the First Minister's comments on the NHS, emphasising the dedication of NHS leaders and staff in providing high-quality care. He highlighted the complexity of managing large organisations and the unprecedented levels of care being delivered.

Hughes pointed out that waiting lists should be viewed within the broader health and care system, including primary care, community care, mental health services, and social care. He stressed the significant challenge of discharging medically fit patients due to pressures in social care, with some hospitals having 20% of beds occupied by patients awaiting discharge.

NHS leaders remain committed to working with the government and various sectors to address these challenges, urging the First Minister to acknowledge the scale of the issues and the necessary actions to resolve them.

Over 90% of adults without an NHS dentist struggled to secure an appointment, with only 9.4% succeeding, according to the Office of National Statistics. The Labour party has pledged to address this by providing 700,000 urgent dental appointments annually. Dental deserts, once confined to rural areas, are now widespread, leading many to seek care from hospitals or GPs.

The health insight survey revealed that 77.4% of those unable to access dental care did nothing, while 10.7% sought private care. In contrast, 94.3% of adults attempting to contact their GP were successful, with 76.8% making contact on the same day. Pharmacy services received high satisfaction, though 20.1% faced issues obtaining NHS prescriptions.

Haris Shuaib, a consultant clinical scientist at Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, highlighted a significant blockage in AI deployment within the NHS at the Digital Health Networks Exchange event.

He noted that while some AI deployment stages are functional, they are insufficient for widespread implementation. Shuaib emphasised the need for investment in people to ensure safe AI adoption and warned against drafting AI strategies without practical experience.

Shuaib presented a four-stage AI transformation playbook for NHS trusts, advocating for initial AI pilot projects, building in-house AI teams, providing broad AI training, and finally developing a comprehensive AI strategy. He also announced a strategic partnership between his startup, Newtons Tree, and Hexarad to enhance NHS radiology technology access. Lord Ara Darzi's independent review and The Health Foundation's report both underscored the urgent need for a concrete AI adoption strategy in the NHS.

The NHS is enhancing its 24-hour live data centres, strengthening same-day emergency care, and expanding falls services for older people to prepare for winter. NHS England has urged systems to ensure all services collaborate for patient safety and timely treatment, including front door assessments and timely discharges.

Measures include community care for complex needs, mental health response vehicles, and care transfer hubs. Vaccination campaigns for RSV, COVID-19, and flu aim to prevent a "tripledemic." NHS England will review integrated care systems to cut waiting times and improve patient safety. Urgent and emergency care staff are preparing for increased demand, with a focus on patient safety and reducing delays.

Home healthcare providers are increasingly modernising applications to meet the growing demand for home-based care. Amedisys, a major provider, has successfully implemented Intel's vPro platform, enhancing remote device management and reducing downtime. This has led to significant cost savings and improved efficiency, particularly in troubleshooting and security management.

VNS Health has also benefited from IT modernisation, implementing an HR self-service platform that streamlines processes and improves data accuracy. This system allows for better case management and quicker responses to employee queries, ultimately enhancing HR services and operational efficiency. Both examples underscore the critical role of technology in optimising healthcare delivery and workforce management.
